Lessons I Teach Myself
Lessons I Teach Myself
Y'all, who the fuck is Karen??
Ya know, the one that shows up in memes on your Twitter, on your Facebook, your Instagram. The one everybody seems to know and mentions constantly, in different contexts. You sometimes laugh at Karen, well, actually, often you laugh at her. Sometimes you roll your eyes on her ridiculous demands, occasionally you find yourself agreeing with her but you would never dare mention that. No...Never.
Most commonly, Karen is that white suburban lady that always asks in a stern voice
"where is the manager!?" when she doesn't get her way. But she gets political too:
To the peace-loving liberals, Karen is the one who voted for Trump because "I don't like how the way he talks, but hey, he's good for the economy. Besides, boys will be boys."
And for the more conservative folks, Karen is the one that asks people to follow the rules and wear masks because "It's not just about you" and she'll even scold you if you don't. But when racial injustice happens? She tosses her fear of Covid-19 away to the trash, and goes marching in the streets demanding justice, and she'll scold you once again, for not marching along.
I've seen Karen be a laughing stock, a racist, a ditz, uptight, too smart to her own good, be a brat, be ignorant, be privileged. I've seen so many sides of Karen it's hard to imagine her as the same person.
But one thing about her is consistent:
KAREN IS ALWAYS ENTITLED. She always demands more than she 'should.'
Wanna know something?
Karen wasn't always Karen.
Nope. We used to call Karen, by other names:
She was That Bitch, she was The Slut, Whore, Feminist, Crazy Chick, a Witch.
She was Bossy, Bitchy, Annoying, Nasty. She was a Cow, a Chick, a Psycho, a Spinster, a Babe....
See a pattern here!?
Karen is yet another derogatory term for a woman that sometime may not do and say what the norm, or the patriarchy, or whoever else, would want her to.
You know, she's a PERSON.
With her own set of ideas and beliefs and desires. (I gotta admit though.. sometimes Karen IS entitled, and needs a wake-up call that she isn't the center of the universe, so if you are listening Karen, would you turn it down a notch!?)
Now that I sort of answered the question 'Who The Fuck Is Karen!?' , I got an even more important question on my mind: Where The Fuck Is Bob!? Or John!? Or Dave!?
I guess we don't mock MEN nearly as much as we do women.
So... does that mean men NEVER demand more than they 'should?? '
I guess Bob, or John, or Dave, can be ten times more entitled than Karen, and not only do we not laugh at him, we may find ourselves calling him yet by another name: The President.
Tamar Pelzig pledged to write something every day, even if it's only a word, so she welcomed to the world a daily blog that may, or may not be, of any significance to anyone other than herself. If you found her lil' life lessons, stories, poems and blurbs meaningful to you, well that's f**ing amazing! Comment and share so she can pat herself in the back - she doesn't do that nearly enough. Cheers.
