The claps. The cheers. The high-fives....all replaced in 2020 with the CAR HONK.
That's what I noticed when I watched the official projection announcing the President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris, and leaped to my feet to join the people in my city, and honk my joy like there is no tomorrow. The street turned into a spontaneous block party, so I parked my car and replaced my honk with my dancing feet. I saw young people with their best beats on, waving US flags that didn't trigger me for the first time in four years, I saw parents and their children, with a huge rock lifted off their shoulders, I saw costumes and slogans on T-shirts, on masks, on signs. The mood was obvious: it was JOY. Pure joy. Something we have marched for since that rough winter of 2016-2017, something so fleeting we didn't allow ourselves to feel this whole time But don't be mistaken: this moment of joy isn't denial. It is merely a moment to embrace the collective feeling of relief, and relish in its presence. Come Monday - this moment would pass and the next would be many moments of gathering, planning, organizing, so the transition could be as painless as it possibly can be. So let's have our moment of joy, and lets be JOYOUS in it, because the next moment? It's a whole lot of WORK.
